The History of VCI Events

It all started in 1993 after a family trip to Disney World when former sports TV Broadcaster Kirk Rhinehart realized that a camcorder would’ve been the perfect way to capture the timeless memories he had just made in Orlando.

Unfortunately, there was no convenient way for the bulky filming device at the time to make the journey across the country safely. He thought, however, a rental available near the park was a purchase he was more than willing to make.

Back home in Orange County, California, that thought led to an idea, “Why not offer camcorder rentals to families traveling out of state to visit Disneyland?” That idea led to the start of a business known as VideoCam that specialized in renting camcorders and launched the trajectory of a company that would one day be known as VCI Events.

What started as a small camcorder rental company quickly grew into so much more in 1995 when VideoCam broke into the projector sector of the business when an emerging rock and roll group needed gear for an upcoming tour. That quickly escalated into a sales and engineering partnership between Kirk and his partner, Evan Goldschlag, and in 1996 VideoCam started providing AV services for events.

By 1999 VideoCam had outgrown its offices and moved into a warehouse in Anaheim where they would spend the next 23 years expanding the business by building specialized video processing systems designed specifically for events.

Fast forward to 2013, VideoCam became VCI Event Technology (VCI), Inc and the company emerged as a leader in the AV Event Services space. With years of experience in broadcast, sales and engineering, VCI Inc. quickly became known as the engineering-led AV company with superior project management on the West Coast.

The countless opportunities of ‘firsts’ in the industry, positioned VCI as a trusted source for corporate events of all sizes including keynote, breakout sessions, tradeshows, and activations. In 2015 the VCI team was presented with their largest opportunity to date with an AV deal to design and install media at Disneyland Shanghai. This deal secured VCI’s position as a local, national and now international leader in the AV industry.

Then in 2020, when the global pandemic deeply impacted the event world, VCI had to pivot to survive. The team of directors went back to the drawing board, revisiting their mission, vision and values to remain steadfast in carrying the legacy of the business forward through value-based decision making.

Dedicated to persevering no matter what, this pivot led to the offering of virtual and hybrid events. The warehouse space quickly turned into a virtual event space complete with the VCI standards of high-quality production and technical work to keep the spirit of events alive.

Putting their values, vision and mission first, the VCI team was able to be on the forefront of virtual event offerings that sustained the business through a year without in-person events.

This proving ground brought the leadership team together to form bonds that would continue to drive the company forward in the years to come.

Emerging from the pandemic with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger identity, the team understood that it had set forth on a new trajectory. With that, VCI underwent a rebrand to symbolize the metamorphosis that occurred leading up to its 30th year in business.

In 2023, VCI Events celebrates 30 years of bringing Excellence at Every Stage to events across the West Coast and beyond. Settling into a new space in Lake Forest, CA with a new name and a new look, the team of hardworking, service, and engineering-led experts continue to offer cutting-edge ideas to their clients near and far.
